Happy first day of summer!!

It’s official… summer has ARRIVED! That means sunshine, BBQs, beaches, and bikinis! Today the sun will reach its highest point in the sky at 7:09 pm. [this is the summer solstice and marks the official start of summer] To kick off the season I am doing a 3 day juice cleanse. Today is day 2 and I’m loving it so far 🙂 Yesterday’s juice was my favorite… but today’s is a very close 2nd. It consists of [apple, celery, cucumber, ginger, parsley & spinach (yum!!)]  and is delish. Full post including a summary of the cleanse, my opinion, and most importantly results to come! I can’t wait to share with all of you on Friday 🙂

It’s Been Awhile…

I realize that I have been completely neglecting my blog for the better portion of a year. School has managed to completely take over my life. I live, breathe, eat, and sleep science & medicine, but find myself starving for creative expression! One of my resolutions for this coming year is to find some balance in my life. This tends to be easier said than done, but I think it will be absolutely necessary in order to maintain my sanity this coming semester! I figure i might as well get a head start. With just about a month of freedom left and so many fun activities planned I want to make sure to set aside time for some of my favorite things and I am bursting at the seems with ideas for future projects.  I hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season and I am looking forward to posting again soon!

What’s Your Dosha?

While flipping through the pages of Whole Living at my Acupuncturist’s office yesterday, I stumbled upon a really interesting article about Ayurveda.  The Sanskrit root ayu means “life”, and veda means “pure knowledge.”  Ayurveda is therefore “the science of life”, an ancient practice summarizing the Hindu art of healing and prolonging life.  I had heard about Ayurveda and was semi-familiar with some of it’s teachings, but had never taken the time to learn about the basic principle that Ayurveda builds it’s practice upon, the Doshas.  There are 3 Dosha types, Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.   After taking a short quiz in the magazine, it was revealed to me that I am a Kapha (earth and water).  The more I read about Kapha’s, the more I realize that I truly am a Kapha, through and through.  I am now a believer and really interested in learning more about Ayurveda.  Here is a short, online quiz offered by the Chopra Center for Well Being right here in San Diego.  I recommend taking part I to find your Dosha type, followed by part II to discover your current mind-body state.  http://store.chopra.com/dosha-survey.asp  So tell me… what’s your Dosha?

Going Green

In honor of Earth Day, I decided to pay tribute to the color green, jade in particular. “Green” is no longer limited to describing the way we live our lives and what goes in our bodies, but equally as important… what goes ON our bodies. Jade is the new black and we are beginning to see it anywhere and everywhere this season. In Fashion: Jade is universally flattering, but looks especially stunning on sun-kissed skin. In Jewelry: Jade has powerful healing properties. It symbolizes peace and brings inner serenity and harmony to one’s life. It is also believed to attract good luck. In Beauty: Jade nails are so much fun and celebs such as Rachel Bilson and Alexa Chung have been sporting them. Find your own unique way to incorporate jade into your summer style and everyone will be greenwith envy.

Tunic… or not to Tunic.

Tunics are all the rage right now and I couldn’t be more excited! Not quite a shirt… not quite a dress, but quite fabulous if you ask me. They are SO versatile and absolutely anybody and everybody can pull off this look. Paired with leggings and boots or gladiator sandals makes for a great daytime look, or take it to a whole other level with tights and your very highest of heels to shut-it-down when the sun goes down! Though the tunic has been around since the 12th century, spring 2010 is truly it’s time to shine! In my eyes, the tunic can do no wrong; still, I must offer a word of warning… To avoid looking like a Roman gladiator, accessorize, accessorize, accessorize! MORE is MORE! This gunnysack shape is BEGGING to be bedecked with your favorite shiny things. So femme it up, rock it out, and most importantly… have fun with this timeless trend.

Where The Wild Things Are…

Unless you’ve been in hibernation, you have probably noticed that fur has been HUGE this season! Celebs have been sporting their finest furs all around town and causing a ruckus… fortunately for us PETA members, there are plenty of fabulous faux’s that we can really sink our teeth into. As the weather warms up there will be no need to shed your winter coat. This look will easily transition into Spring in the form of fur vests, snakeskin accessories, and LOTSof feathers!

We’re all MAD here…

It’s no WONDER everyone’s going BA-NANAS over Alice in Wonderland. Tim Burton’s latest flick will undoubtedly equal box office gold… but who knew it would make such an impact on haute couture. Alice is going high fashion and it’s easy to see why people have been swept away by this storybook inspired style. The look is over the top! It is so romantic and ethereal; it truly transports you to another time and place. Whether you’re falling down the rabbit hole or attending high tea with the queen of hearts… don’t be late for THISvery important date.

Come Sail Away…

The Nautical look hit New York’s Fashion week with a SPLASH! Designers have been drawing inspiration from patterns and prints form the 1940’s and putting a twist on these classic styles. The great thing about this trend is that it is easily accessible and can be worn in all forms. It doesn’t matter if you’re swabbing the deck or hitting the town, anyone can rock this look… so you better get your sea legs before this fad really takes floatin Spring 2010!
